A Childhood Fascination

When Matt was about seven years old, his parents took him to a Renaissance fair where he saw an artist blowing glass live. He stayed in front of the demonstration all day, captivated by the way heat and skill could transform glass into art. To him, it felt like magic.

Nearly 30 years later, that childhood fascination found its way back to him. While Matt was working part time as a dog groomer, a customer mentioned that his new roommate was a lampworker. That introduction led to a three-hour beginner’s glass class with a local artist.

By the following day, Matt was already designing his own glass studio. He knew he had finally discovered what he was born to do.

Glass Made by Matt

Matt creates every glass piece offered by Greentrees Glass by hand in his Vacaville, California studio. His work includes memorial keepsakes, pendants, flowers, sculptures, ornaments, and other original borosilicate glass art.

Because each piece is shaped individually in the flame, no two are ever exactly alike.

Rayann is creative in her own right, enjoying crochet, painting, and a variety of other crafts. Her handmade creations may occasionally appear in the shop, but Matt is the artist behind all Greentrees Glass glasswork.

How Memorial Glass Began

Matt had never known that cremains could be incorporated into glass, but once the idea occurred to him, he couldn’t stop thinking about how meaningful it could be: a beautiful piece of glass art that allowed someone to keep a loved one close.

He began by practicing with fireplace ash. Once he felt ready to learn from real experience, he offered complimentary memorial pieces to local families who were willing to entrust him with a small amount of their pets’ cremains.

That was where his two greatest passions came together: melting glass and helping others.

A Personal Experience

Creating memorial glass is about much more than making an object. Matt works directly with each family to design something that feels personal and meaningful.

Families may also choose to watch their memorial being created live. This allows them to be involved in the decisions as the piece takes shape and to experience the process alongside Matt.

The most meaningful moments come afterward—when Matt receives a heartfelt email or sees the smile on someone’s face as they hold their loved one close again.

Every memorial is created with the hope that it will bring comfort, peace, and a lasting connection.
